The buyer you have not met

The familiar names are a starting point. The strongest fit may sit in another sector, another market or a strategy you have not yet considered.

Most owners can name the likely buyers for their company. A nearby competitor, a larger group that has shown interest or an investor active in the sector. Those names belong in the discussion. They should not define its boundary.

Familiarity tells you who is visible. It does not always tell you who has the strongest reason to act. That reason may belong to a business in an adjacent sector, a group entering Europe or an investor whose existing portfolio is missing a particular capability.

Start with fit, not familiarity

A relevant buyer needs more than the means to complete a transaction. There should be a case for why this company matters to that buyer. It might add a product, a customer base, a certification, a team or a route into a market that would be difficult to build alone.

A disciplined search therefore starts with the company being sold. What is distinctive about it? Where could that create value for another owner? Which buyers have acted on similar priorities before? The answers produce hypotheses that can be tested, not just names added to a list.

A long list is not enough

Reach without judgement can damage a process. Each candidate should be checked for strategic fit, ability to transact, potential conflicts and the risk of sharing information. The owner and advisor can then decide whom to approach, in what order and with what level of disclosure.

AI can make that research broader and easier to keep current. It does not decide who receives the owner's name. That remains a human judgement, made with the owner and governed by the confidentiality of the process.

The question worth asking

An owner choosing an advisor should ask how the buyer universe will be built and why each party will be included. A good answer explains the method, the criteria and the safeguards. The familiar names may still prove right. The important point is that the market was examined before that conclusion was reached.
